The Spanish prison classification in practice is reviewed in this article: the actual classification criteria used, percentage of prison population distributed in the different groups and whether it is a treatment method or whether it serves other functions. A detailed study of the person for appropriate grouping and continuous monitoring of developments in the treatment is not done in Spanish prisons. Discipline and submission to the prison order are the aspects that prevail in the classification process. Furthermore, in a progressive system, development to less restrictive regimes should be the standard and regression the exception. Finally, open regime should take priority over other systems, something that does not actually happen.
